A retired Photographer travelling with a camera
And a smile....
How it started...
I left school at 15 with big dreams and went on to train as a Marine Engineering Mechanic. Soon after, I packed my kit bag and went to sea. While travelling the world, I began taking photographs - at first simply to document my journeys, but quickly as a creative hobby.
Photography soon became a passion. After careful consideration, I enrolled in college in 1983 and qualified as a professional photographer in 1984. That decision marked the beginning of a long and successful career in commercial photography.
Like many creatives, working full-time as a photographer eventually took its toll. Over time, photography became more of a job than a passion, and I lost my creative spark. A few years ago, I made a conscious decision to reconnect with my craft, my artistry, and my technical skills.
I began photographing for myself again - first digitally, and later returning to traditional film photography, working with chemicals and the darkroom. That return to analogue photography reignited my love for the medium and restored the creative freedom that first drew me to photography.
PHOTOGRAPHY
“There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” – Ansel Adams
And then one day, it all finished...
After decades behind the camera - first as an employee and later as a freelance photographer - I stepped away from full-time work in 2023. For a while, I split my time between months of travel and months of intense work. I knew the pace wasn’t sustainable, and by the start of 2025 I decided it was time to fully retire, bringing a 42-year career in photography to a close.
Since then, life has slowed down in the best possible way. I go to bed later, wake up even later, and travel whenever the mood takes me.
This website is dedicated to my photography. You won’t find examples of commissioned or commercial work here - only personal images. These photographs are made for my own enjoyment, shared openly for anyone to see, and kept as a visual record of the places I’ve been and the moments I want to remember.
