A Journey in Monochrome
I grew up with film...
For most of my life I've used film, and even though I embraced this new medium, I still missed film. It's a hands-on process where you have to think about your exposure before you even press the shutter button. Then you have to develop the negatives and once they are dry, make prints from the negatives. At every step of the journey you were hands-on, especially in the darkroom where time and temperature were king and queen.
I miss the whole process. The skill of making the right exposure, the discipline of developing the negatives and the joy of taking correctly exposed negatives out of the drying cabinet. I also miss the smell of darkrooms and being involved during the whole process. A few years ago I started taking pictures for myself again, and eventually started using film again. It was a way of escape from the day-to-day of the digital world, and a way of re-connecting me back to photography.
Big cameras to small cameras...
All the pictures in the film gallery were taken using several different cameras. The three format sizes are: 5x4 inch, 6x6cm or 35mm.
For 5x4 inch negatives I used an old MPP camera which dates from the 1950's, and a camera I actually used when I first became a photographer. For the 6x6cm pictures I used either a Balda from the late 1950's or a Zeiss camera from the late 1930's. And for 35mm I used either a Voigtlander Bessa from the 1990's or a Nikon-F camera from the 1970's.
