La Coupole - a legacy or war.
La Coupole Centre D'histoire is about 25 km south of Calais. It was a system of tunnels and a large reinforced dome which was built by the Nazis in WW2 as a base to fire V2 rockets to England. Fortunately the site was bombed several times by the RAF and USAF and the site was abandoned before completion. The scary part is that if it had been completed, not only would it have been futuristic in its design, build and application, it would have wreaked utter havoc in southern England.
The scale and level of engineering was immense. Not only the concept, but the engineering and the way they made the dome. When you enter, you are handed a pair of headphones which are connected to an iPad and as you walk around and scan markers, a film would show how it would have been in that particular area if it had been completed. And be prepared to be shocked when you actually go into the dome. The size will shock you. It's huge. Also on display were many rocket related items, including a V1 and V2 rocket. And while there, you MUST watch the planetarium show. Stunning. This is one of the best museums I've ever been to because not only does it show you how, it also tells you why. And all this for 14eu.
