Romania – the North

Sepanta, the churches and the wilderness.

I made my way to the north of Romania to the small town of Sepanta. Besides many miles of logging tracks through the nearby mountains, there is also some wonderful churches to see nearby.

I spent two days riding the tracks through the mountains on my motorbike. I also visited the church in Sapanta - and wow…! It's called the Merry Cemetery because everything is colourful. The church AND the grave markers, with each marker having a carved picture of the person in life, and sometimes how they died. The church itself is amazing too, with a roof covered in coloured tiles to make patterns, and inside it's like the Cistene chapel on steroids. It's amazing, with artwork on every bit of wall or ceiling.
After that I went to visit the nearby Peri-Sapanta Monastery. There is a towering wooden church built over a brick chapel, and then an adjacent monastery building. The spire on the church is 78m high, and it's the third tallest church in Romania.
