Transylvania

Crossing into Romania was easy. I headed to Podu Dambovitei in Transylvania, where I found a campsite with a wonderful view over the mountains. Besides exploring the local area I also visited the Castle in Rasnov. Its a beautiful village, and to get to the castle on top of the small mountain you have to get a funicular, which gave you a wonderful view on the way up.

I also visited Castle Bran, which was the inspiration for Brahm Stoker's book ‘Dracula’ in 1897. To be honest, I was completely unimpressed with the castle. Too many coach trips, too many shops selling tourist tat, too many people in the castle and poor information about the history of the castle, especially as Vlad the Impaler lived there during his torturous reign. The only thing that did spike my interest was the museum of torture, with lots of original torture devices. Living in the middle ages definitely wasn't fun…!
