Soviet Statues
While camping in the southern part of Lithuania, I went to the town of Druskininkai and to Grutas Park, which is a large park with around 120 statues from Soviet days.
I like art and love the boldness of soviet artwork, which is why I wanted to visit. Besides animals for the kids, such as Emu’s that give you the evil eye, wallabies, ducks and geese, there was all these wonderful statues from the Soviet era. There were the obligatory statues of Lenin, as well as Lithuanians, some who were part of the soviet apparatus and some who died fighting during the German occupation. When Lithuania became independent many statues were broken up but most were collected and eventually put into this park. There was also a museum with lots of artifacts and information about the Soviet days.
